Sennheiser HD-212 Customer Review(s):
Summary: Awesome sound for PC Movies XBox Rating: 5 (out of 5) Comment: Since nobody has mentioned gaming movies with these, I thought I should write about it since that's mainly what I use them for. They sound fantastic, have great bass (but certainly not overwhelming), and are very comfortable. Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty on the PC sound incredible, as do DVD movies (on my big screen) and XBox games. Rainbow 6 Black Arrow sounds especially good. They aren't noise-cancelling, but I can't hear any background noise when I'm playing, that's for sure. My wife has to flick the lights on and off to get my attention, but they're great for when my 3 year old is sleeping. Very happy I bought these. Can't go wrong at that price (paid $63 CDN after xchange conversion and free shipping to my sister's place in Seattle). .........................................................................................................................................................................
Summary: I liked them until the cable broke Rating: 2 (out of 5) Comment: Good sound and comfort etc. However, the cables are pretty thin and flimsy, especially for a dj set. They are advertised as having replaceable cables, which is a plus, good luck however finding a replacement! .........................................................................................................................................................................
Summary: Over-rated Headphones. Biased Sound Masking Details Rating: 2 (out of 5) Comment: I was happy with my HD202 until it has its cord gone bad recently. I 'upgraded' to HD212pro and regreted for what I did.
The aesthetics of the HD212 is similar with HD202 except its futuristicretro silver color. Ear-pads and head-band are lined with pleather and feel comfy. Its cords, unlike the 202, are detachable, which means that you could replace the cords to extend your phones' life if it happens to be ruined, that's just why I'm buying the 212 instead of getting another pair of satisfactory HD202.
The HD212 is a closed-type can described to be for 'DJ' use, the same also applies for the HD202. It provides good isolation from outside noises. The sonic signature of both headphones is similar but with one character hugely different. I don't wanna call it 'warm', but rather 'masked'. The HD212 is heavily biased towards the bass-end of the sonic spectrum with strong bass dominating every kind of music. One can call it 'full' or 'rich', and it might be good for Hip Hop and dance music for some taste, yet I find it doing too much exaggeration. If this bass-inclined character has its merits for music with strong beats, then it's disastrous with most other kinds of music. Vocals, melodic lines, tone colors of instruments are all masked by the over-boosted bass. Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' sounds congested rather than sophistically layered, with the sax, drum and bass all fused into an uninteresting mass of sound. Hi-end extension of the HD212 is noticeably limited. Trebles are laid back, mids edgy and recessed, probably due also to the overly-prominent bass. I wonder what music could survive such heavy veiling. Classical and jazz sound clear with the HD202, but every nuance of detail is plagued by the ubiquitous bass of the 212. I even couldn't enjoy pop music coming out from the 212, found Jimi Hendrix's guitar veiled and lacking 'life' through them. Burning-in for 20 hours improve a bit but the unbalance of sound is not a bit solved.
In conclusion, the HD212 is over-rated and strictly for bass-heads and gamers only. The bass coming out of this phones is WAY TOO MUCH than one would need. Music sounds unnatural through the HD212. Not recommended. .........................................................................................................................................................................
