SHURE Sound Isolating Customer Review(s):

Summary: Best headphones I've owned
Rating: 5 (out of 5)
Comment: These headphones provide a simply incredible listening experience. I have previously owned a pair of Grado SR 60 open air headphones. Their wire connections have been in need of some re-soldering, but now that I have these I don't really see the point in using any other headphone again... ever.

Having never owned a real in-ear monitor style headphone, I was initially concerned that these would not fit in my ears, even though they provide numerous different sleeves for different shaped ears. When they arrived, I was relieved that they do fit very nicely. I wear them wrapped over the back of my ears, with the smallest clear plastic sleeve. When you put them in, it helps to use some gentle twisting. It's really pretty hard to push these too far in, and the farther they are inside your ears, the better the seal, and the better the bass response.

I have used these, thus far, for portable listening and home studio recording. They are perfect. They are so nicely balanced that they eliminate the need for any EQ. The bass response is very satisfying.

I would recommmend these to anybody who's thinking about upgrading their crummy earbuds (like those that come with most portable cd and mp3 players). If you can swing the pricetag, do it, take good care of them, and you should never need a new pair of headphones.

Summary: Great IEMs.

Comment: I returned a pair of E3Cs because these sounded much better. Excellent isolation.

Summary: Great sound but expensive
Rating: 5 (out of 5)
Comment: I've been using my Shure E4's for about 2 months now. Mostly using them from my iPod 20GB Color to a line-out to a portable headphone amp then to the E4's. The sound at first wasn't too bright, compared to my previous E3's it was still brighter but not as nice as the Sony MDR-V6's. After a few weeks of listening I noticed that the highs were starting to come out more, increasing the brightness.

Overall the earphones now sound very nice, in fact I personally like the sound of the E4's over the E3's or E2's. I find that the E4's have the best mix of lows and highs without any muddyness found on the lower earphones. I did slightly notice that I needed to turn up the volume on my iPod a tad higher than before with the E2's or E3's, this has to do with the higher ohm rating of the E4's. It's not a great amount, maybe 2 or 3 clicks, and typically I use the headphone amp instead of running straight from my iPod headphone out.

Overall I really enjoy these headphones but the biggest limiting factor is the pricing. Unless you reall, really need the best possibly sound under $300 for an 'in ear' monitor I would suggest the E4's but if you can do with a slightly bassey sound then the E2's should fit the bill. I tried out the others and they didn't compare to my Sony headphones as well as the E4's but to others they might sound just right.

Something I also really like with all of the 'in ear' monitor type headphones is the sound isolation properties. I work in a data center where the sound is a constand 80db, about as loud as a busy city street. Normally I wear ear plugs when I'm working in their for long periods but recently switched to brining my iPod with me. Now with the Shure ear phones I can listen to my music as a safe level but drop the outside sound about 15db (doesn't sound like much but it's enough to listen to classical music, no problem).

Be warned that with any 'in ear' monitor type earphones you need a very tight sealing to get the best sound. I recommend using the yellow ear plug type foamies for the best sealing. You can easily tell if you headphones are not sealed correctly, the bass is totally lacking and sounds very tinny. Down side, the yellow foamies get dirty very fast from using your fingers to roll them to fit your ears. Recommend getting at least a few extra sets.

Pros:
Great sound mix, good lows and highs
Blackgray color, doesn't stand out like the white E4C's
Heavy duty cables
Large selection of ear fitments

Cons:
Price
Not as easy to put onremove as regular ear budsheadphones
Foams get dirty quickly
