Comment: With my husband, for buying me a Bose SoundDock for an early Christmas gift! I don't like being isolated from the kids and the telephone and the requests of the dogs like I am when I groove with headphones. But I did want to enjoy the same clarity of sound I experience when I'm plugged in. I did my research--it struck me as a stellar endorsement that there are very few used Bose SoundDocks available. People keep them, because they love them! I read all the reviews, and I must say I am surprised anyone thinks this item is too large to be portable. It's neither heavy nor characterized by a large footprint. And the sound! Just gorgeous! It doesn't distort while cranked up, and at low volumes I can still hear Eddie Van Halen's fingers sliding on the guitar strings and Sarah Brightman's intake of breath before hitting the high notes. I love my Ipod, and I love the Bose SoundDock for letting my use it to drown out my kids, the phone and the dogs. The only thing I love more is my husband's definition of 'early.'

Comment: This is the perfect accessory to bring your music into a room with limited space. As others have said, the Bose is not portable as in carry-it-around-with-you, but it's certainly easy to unplug and move around. I keep it in my bedroom most of the time, and take it out to our second home for the summer, where it lives in the kitchen. Sets up in a minute, keeps the IPOD charged, and has a small, idiot-simple remote. Yes, it's pricey, but I can't forget the days when one paid hundreds of dollars for a huge, mediocre sound system, and the quality you got didn't match this. Maybe it's not for a serious audiophile, but if you just like your music simple and convenient, I'd recommend the Bose.
ps--yes, it's true that IPod technology is changing at a lightning pace. But I think we're going to see the day pretty soon when people own more than one IPod. There's no reason why I wouldn't just keep my regular old 20 gig Ipod with music fully loaded permanently with the Bose.

Summary: Pricey with Horrible Sound

Comment: Bose...ah yes Bose. Back in the 70s they were the best ever in speaker research. Now? Well..it's just the name you're buying. First of, this portable isn't portable at all. It weighs a TON. Second, the sound...which is my biggest gripe, besides the $299 price tag, is completely disappointing. I know small speakers sound awful, but this one just proves that small speakers are just BAD. Now...remember that the sound format you are using is a compressed digital sound file which really isn't the best sounding format. So don't expect Bose to produce CD quality sound because it won't. Here's what I can tell about the speakers...treble is flat, bass is flat, and there's some sort of static hissing in the background. To an untrained ear this is not noticeable. Try playing a standard jazz tune and you'll hear that weird static sound. Also, for $299.00, you don't want to invest on an Ipod accessory where the technology changes every month. Imagine burning $299.00 which by next year is already obsolete as Ipod drives get bigger and thicker.
So here's my advice if you want a loud sounding Ipod system. Get an IHome (the Ipod alarm clockportable speaker system)$199.00. THe IHome comes with a LINE OUT jack. Then you buy a Y-adapter for $5.99. Connect the IHome to a boombox or to your stereo system using the Line OUT jack and the Y-adapter. Set your stereo system to Auxiliary and BOOM you are ready to put the house with music...all for $205.00 only. You get good sound and loud bassy sound. When you're done, just disconnect the Ihome from your stereo system because the Ihome is portable.
Don't let the name BOSE get you. Always look for quality and never the name. BOSE has severely jacked their prices up just because it's a BOSE but it's not the BOSE I knew 20 years ago. I've had Wharfdales, ARs, Nakamichis, etc. and so far the most decent speakers I've had were the JBLs.
