Summary: Spectacular Sound for the Price

Comment: I wanted a set of great headphones for use with my ‘pod mini on the subways, at the beach, and late at night in my NYC apt (with thin walls). I bought, tested and returned several headphones in the $35-$90 price range and the ATH-Pro5MS beat all the others for sound quality by a mile. I tested the Sennheiser HD-477, HD-212, PX100; the Panasonic RP-HC70, RP-HT722, RP-HC100; the Sony MDR-V300, MDRV 600, MDRV 700; and the JVC HANC100. (I'll never understand why anyone would buy those crappy Sony products.) None of these came anywhere close to delivering the sound of the ATH-Pro5MS.
I listen to a wide range of music, currently lots of JS Bach and lots of deep house. On the ATH-Pro5MS the top treble sounds are crisp and sharp, the bottom bass is rich and AMAZINGLY full, and the mid-range is clear with no muffling. The frequency response range of 15-28,000 Hz, the widest of all the headphones in this price range, makes an amazing difference. Not to mention the 103 db sensitivity: this headset really has power.
The downsides: 1) the militaristic camouflage pattern on the casing is so unPC; 2) this large headset looks a bit goofy on my relatively small head; and 3) extended use -a couple of hours non-stop- is a bit uncomfortable on my ears.
The sound from this headset is so spectacularly great that I'm very glad I finally settled on it, despite the way it looks. If you can live with the cons I mentioned here, then I highly recommend you get this headset. You can't do better for the price
